Choose an AI writing tool for the work you actually do
A task-first guide to comparing general AI assistants and dedicated writing editors, using their published documentation.
What kind of writing help do you need most?
Start with a recurring task: creating a first draft, revising text you already wrote, checking grammar and clarity, or working from source material. Compare tools on that task instead of treating “AI writing” as one feature.
When should you start with a general AI assistant?
A conversational assistant may fit when you want help across several writing stages, such as brainstorming, drafting, rewriting, or summarizing. OpenAI lists those tasks among ChatGPT capabilities; check the current feature and plan details for your account before relying on a specific tool.
When should you consider a dedicated writing editor?
A writing editor may fit when you want suggestions while composing or reviewing a document. Grammarly documents suggestions for grammar, spelling, word choice, and paragraph-level rewrites in its writing surface. Availability can depend on product and subscription; verify current terms directly.
How can you compare tools fairly?
Use the same short sample and task in each tool. Check whether the result preserves your meaning, follows your style instructions, makes useful edits, and fits your existing writing workflow. These are evaluation steps for your own use, not claims that one product performs better.
What should you verify before choosing?
Read the current official feature, access, privacy, and pricing pages for the exact product and plan you will use. This guide does not compare plan prices, privacy terms, or writing quality, and product features can change.
Is AI detection a reliable way to judge writing?
Do not use a detector as proof that a person did or did not write a passage. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot reliably identify whether it generated specific text. Follow the relevant school, workplace, or publisher policy and keep human review in the process.
